Rockford’s Hispanic chamber celebrates grand opening of new commerce building

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Illinois celebrated National Support Latino Business Day on Tuesday. The Rockford Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrated by opening up their new home!

The RRHCC held a grand opening Tuesday morning for its new office on Rockford's Miracle Mile in the 4200 block of E. State St.

The RRHCC has been in development since early 2019.

The idea formed around Latino business owners in Rockford facing barriers to get their businesses off the ground, such as language barriers.

"Sometimes it's not readily available or hidden in plain sight...or sometimes business owners don't even understand what the word grant means so maybe bringing in more education as to what services are available," Sully Cadengo, the Rockford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President, said.

Based on the 2010 U.S. Census numbers, the Rockford Latino population makes up about 18.4% of the total Rockford population. Rockford is expected to see an increase of the Latino population once the 2020 U.S. Census is released. As the Latino population increases, more Latino businesses are forecast to contribute to the 200+ businesses that currently reside in the Rockford area.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker took to Twitter to recognize National Support Latino Business Day, saying:

Today is National Support Latino Business Day, and I'm proud Illinois is the first state to recognize this important day. I encourage all Illinoisans to join me in supporting Latino businesses and celebrating the invaluable contributions they provide to the state.

The RRHCC says they will continue to work with business owners, organizations, and municipalities to promote and defend responsible, equitable economic development, job opportunities, government, educational excellence, and long-term sustainability for local Latino and minority residents.
